4 wheel drive stops working any time it gets wet

I have a 2022 and every time I take it off-road and have to cross a stream it isn't too long and the 4 wheel drive indicator goes orange. It doesn't seem to do it when it's rainy or snowy, just when I cross something over a foot deep or splash it a lot. It doesn't drop out of whatever mode I'm in, but it often won't come out of 4wd properly. If I'm in 4-low and try to put it into 2wd it will only go to 4-high with an orange 4x4 symbol. Sometimes it will say it's in 2wd but the symbol will be orange and when I turn I can tell I'm still in 4-high based on wheel skip. Then I have to put it in and out of 4-low a couple times and it will finally drop into 2wd. All very disconcerting when you're blocking traffic in the process.

I took it to the dealer to have them check it and they said they couldn't find anything wrong. I told them it seems like it only happens when it gets wet. I used it a couple weeks ago in a dry situation and had no issues.

Is this an actuator problem or what?

I would think there’s obviously some electrical connection exposed, or wires pulled, loose ground, something. Hope you find it.

I have had similar issues when the actuator had went bad. I think thats a reasonable guess. Not sure how hard it is to change on the ZR2, but might be worth a shot. Last one I did was on a Tacoma and it was pretty easy.

That's happened to me before but only during hard snow wheeling. I let it sit for 5 mins with ignition off and it starts working again but the event starts happening more frequently after that.

I had read an article on this happening to some testers where the 4wd was coming disengaged during some "regular" offroading. I can't recall off the top of my head if it was motortrend, but they called GM directly and they explained to them why this happened.

I'll try and see if I can find the article.

I would make sure but diff locks are off then go into 4H wait for shift then 2WD. Do not go directly into 2WD from low.

I remember seeing something also about that as well. Maybe GM Authority.

Here it is.

"GM trucks with full-time transfer cases are never really locked, front to rear, because they use a clutch for fore-aft power distribution. So when you're in high-range four-wheel drive, or low range, the front and rear axles aren't really physically locked together. They have that clutch in there, doing its best, but with too much load it can tap out. Read the forums, and it usually sounds like 4WD Off shows up when trucks are working hard—in the middle of a mud bog, plowing snow"
