The trucks don't come with a sunglass holder like every other new vehicle made. My idea is for a hinged lid for the storage area in the dash above the radio. This will also add a bit of privacy for any items stored there.

Yep, but just in the original cubby. The lid will need to be "domed " to allow enough clearance for wrap around and aviator sun glasses. If designed correctly it should look factory.

We are considering adding a hinged lid to the original storage compartment, which should meet your requirement. However, there is a slight concern that once the lid is pressed open, the raised cover might obstruct the driver's line of sight.

Perhaps you can develop a hinge system that raises the lid a few inches and then rolls forward towards the windshield, which would minimize any view obstruction.

If the lid is no more than 3-4 inches tall when opened I don't think it should be a problem. At that height it would probably just block seeing part of the hood.

Axe's idea seems like a winner also.
