Emission Delete Legal?

Looks like the diesel tuners might see some redemption from Congress for EPA over stepping their authority.

It's a whole new world out there now!

Well it looks like it's officially a done deal! This video from TK does a good job of discussing the latest EPA actions to eliminate the unlawful "rule making from 2008.

Should make getting delete kits and tunes a little easier soon enough. Not sure if that helps anyone witha ZR2 L5P Duramax in the short run, cause HP Tuners still hasn't cracked the code for the ECU.

Have a question.....everyone says that tuners can't Crack the Global B code on the newer Chevys. How are companies like Pax Power adding superchargers to the 6.2L motors? I'm sure they have to tune the ECU also. So, obviously, they cracked the code somehow, right?

Someone please enlighten me.....

There are companies like HP that have had success with it. But it's not buy, plug, and play. You have to send them your ECM which they modify to be able to accept tuners. Doing that is expensive, and every one is different. So, economies of scale dictates you go for the higher volumes first...gas engines. Diesels have now been done. But also keep in mind that your ECM will be out...You can't install a different one while you wait. The truck "knows" what you have there...Remember, these trucks have a bunch of other modules, all interfaced together.

HP Tuners has cracked it for the gassers through 2024 and the L5P Duramax through 2023. They list all the avaliable models on their website as they complete the work.

Once they have the code cracked you buy the credits to unlock your ECM and TCM and get an OBD II plug to communicate with them. Once you have all that, you work with a diesel tuner who does the tuning and presumably the dyno work and testing. Then the tunes are loaded up via the OBD II port.

So once the rodents cracked it will take some time before tunes are available. Also, if your going to delete, it will take some time to get the delete kits in the pipeline.

I seen a post on Reddit with a supposed link to some social media posts that HP Tuner had recently made saying it has been completed. I coukd not get the link to open, so not sure if it's true.

Good find! I was actually gonna call them again for an update. I talked to them about 1 month ago and they told me there was no ETA and it could be 6 months yet......LOL......I must have talked to the guy sweeping floors.

I have used Duramax Tuners stuff before and really liked the motor and transmission tuning. I might jump in now with these guys. But before I do, I am going to see if they plan to offer a low cost upgrade for delete tunes when available.

Thanks for clearing up the tuning game with this Global B shit.

I talked with Anthony from Duramax Tuner today. They didn't give me a warm fuzzy on their current tuning and future updates.

You have to buy $2,700+ worth of hardware, software, and ECM unlock fees just to get their 2 beta tunes. You have to pull your ECU and ship it to HP Tuners for unlocking (they provide a shipping label).

You do not get any type of monitoring devices or guages, that would be extra. There is no transmission tuning with this package.

No guarantees that future updates will be free or low cost and he actually seemed offended that I asked about future tunes that are compatible with deletes.

The conversation turned sour when I said "I'm not sure it matters to me, but I want the option to delete in the future without having to purchase a whole new package".

He then said "for 16 years we've never offered delete tunes and we don't even believe they will be allowed".

I said "well, there's a 45 day comment period and when thats over the laws that govern emissions post 2008 are gone. That was stated by the EPA Director yesterday. I said I've spent 35 years developing energy projects and I've got a lot of experience with the same federal agency developing power plants. There may be challenges, but it's likely going forward, even if it's challenged in court".

Then he said "we'd have to sit down with our lawyers and re-evaluate our business model, you should know that".

Then he hung up on me......LMFAO. I appreciate that their business has been based upon government overreach and unreliable emissions systems, but it ain't my fault the rules are changing. I just wanted to understand what I could expect for a $2,700 purchase.

Anyways, I've used their products in the past and liked them. But I wouldn't buy from them now for that price and inflexibility. I sure as hell didn't care for his attitude about the changing laws. The government shouldn't be in charge of us having to spend big $ on unreliable emissions systems and limit what we can do with them.

I'll keep looking as more and more options will be available soon from a host of tuners. Right now the Banks system seems to be a much better option with more tunes and guages for $1,500.

No reputable tuner is going to touch deletes. Not sure why y’all are still getting your info from sketchy social media sources when you can just read the EPA proposals yourself.

Automotive emissions are governed through the Clean Air Act. Being an Act of Congress and US Law, businesses above board are bound to follow it. Even if an administration says we won’t enforce, a court would quickly remind them of their oaths of office. Yes I’m aware some members of Congress have proposed rolling that back but those are not serious people and it’s not serious legislation. Codified emissions regulations dealing with particulate matter, smog forming emissions and the like are staying. Yes that means SCR and DPFs aren’t going anywhere either.

EPA greenhouse gas standards are a complex spiderweb and how it relates to motor vehicles is primarily CO2 reduction targets. CO2 being directly linked to the amount of fuel burned goes hand in hand with MPG targets. GM will still be rolling out their hybrid powertrains in 2027 and beyond seeing as they’re almost done with validation.

TL;DR: It’s a dog and pony show for the fat man in the beige house. Nothing overall is changing that will directly affect consumers or manufacturers.
