Anyone having issues with rear axle making loud noises on Silverado zR2. If I grab my rear tire and push back you can hear loud banging noise. Took the tire off and grab the lugs. The axle moves up and down making banging noise. This is both right and left side of the axle.

Also going over small speed bump around 10 mph, the right side front suspension makes this loud thump noise, as if the front end is falling off.

I have nothing but GM trucks all my life and this thing is embarrassing to drive around. I Only has 3,000 miles on it and the only place it has been off a paved road is a rock parking lot at the ball park.

Any help is greatly appreciated before I bring it to chevy and have to deal with this back and forth.

It’s not the rear left springs, I have dealt with that on my 2017 gmc Denali truck. That took months before they decided to just replace them.

Check out with dealership as it is under warranty.

MIght be some bad hardware or perhaps didn't get torqued properly. It's odd that it's happening at 3 corners. May be some driveline issues.

Nevertheless, I would not drive it much. It could be a huge risk if something comes apart.

Mine has been in shop for weeks for rear end clunking. Something tied in with drive train, gets more frequent as speed increases. Dealer replaced entire rear diff and still did not fix. In shop again now.

Awesome SMH. Keep me updated please on the outcome. Mine is only at low speeds that I can hear.

Update: truck was in the shop for a week and the outcome is…… same as my old 2017 gmc truck ( rear leaf springs). They ordered a 12pk of “ZRX” rubber spacers. ZRX is the code for the ZR2 suspension. The parts have not came in yet so we shall see if it makes noise.

It’s definitely not just my truck. They gave me a new truck off the line to drive while mine was in the shop and lol yup that truck sounded just as bad lol.

I will post when they put the new parts on and if it clears it up.

They did say when they looked at my leaf springs, it’s the same ones off the new 2500 trucks. Good for me then lol

Last week it went into the shop to install the new leaf spacers. Noise is gone. Looking at the spacer i don’t think it will last long but we shall see. I did buy the leaf spacer you see online for leaf springs noise just in case down the road it does it again. They said axle movement was in spec.

But it’s all fixed.

I have same issue. Had it to dealer 3 times they thought I was insane as they couldn't find nothing wrong. But this last time I asked a mechanic to come with me and he heard it so I'm not crazy. Goes back to dealer thus week to look see what the problem is

Just took mine back to the dealer this morning. What I thought was the leaf springs on the driver side making a loud clunking noise is apparently the axle. I shook the rear tire to make the noise and service rep immediately said it was my axle. 12K on the truck and it didn't start the noise until probably 10k. He showed me on a brand new Trail Boss that when he shook the rear tire it made the same noise (not as loud though). What a crappy design. Backing out of my garage or going over speed bumps it sounds like the spare tire is bouncing off things. He said GM will say it's normal, apologized for the crap axle design and sent me on my way.

Just got call from dealer telling me nothing wrong. That's the way it's designed. So all I am gonna hear now is a clunking all the time. Perfect fuc gm

Designed to sound like a 15 year old truck that's been beat to hell. I had a 2021 3500 Duramax and the brakes squealed like crazy. Same thing, "nothing we can do". Drove me nuts. Imagine trying to sell one of these pickups used and telling the buyer to ignore the loud clunking sound coming from the rear axle, "it's normal".

I solved my problem. Didn't believe the dealer, bought the rubber "spring-things", installed them today and the clunk is gone. I do still hear the axle making a clunk sound when I shake the rear tire hard but it wasn't causing the loud clunking I was getting. When I back up over uneven ground now or go over speed bumps no more clunk. Hope this helps someone else with this maddening problem. Truck doesn't sound like a 70's model anymore.

I bought them here:

I just ordered them. I have never heard sounds like that. Once I get that solved, I'll need to take my truck to the dealer to see why my steering wheel rubs during rotation.

I've had mine to two different dealers for this exact thing. Backing into or pulling out of my driveway over the concrete joint and it sounds like the spare bouncing off the frame or bed on the drivers side. Both dealers said the same thing, even after telling them about the TSB. "We cant get it to make the noise. I've never heard of that TSB. Try squirting some WD40 on the springs".
Bye-the-bye, the WD40 thing works for about 6 to 8 months.

I'll definitely try the aftermarket route!

Sounded like the rear of the truck was falling apart. I installed “spring thing” and now the sound is gone. Pretty easy install. I lifted one side at a time and chose not to take off the wheel. Only 2 busted knuckles from the screw driver slipping and good to go. Will be interested to know how long they last.

I’m in this forum because I plan to get a Silverado ZR2 but right now I have a 2016 Colorado diesel (which I 98% love and it’s why I kept it so long). But from the way you describe the noise it sounds like a problem I have on my truck (and other Colorados). I took it to a dealer for the service bulletin below but they kind of jerked me around - wanted $900 to replace the bump stops on the leaf springs - which I know is not the problem. But they wanted to start there. There is a clip in the axle housing cover that I feel is certain the cause of the noise. If I were you I’d find a way to get this clip replaced - I don’t think it’s very hard but I don’t enjoy working on such things now that I’m older.

My truck has been doing it for years. I only hear it when backing out of the drive or hitting certain kinds of bumps - and I’ve just learned to live with it. It doesn’t get worse with time.

The leaf springs have dampening pads that are woefully underwhelming. You can replicate the exact sound by laying under the truck and pulling up and down on the bumper brace bar. It’s the leaf springs rubbing at the point where the buffer pads are. Spring Thing is just a bigger pad. Totally dampens the leaf spring noise.
