New Oil Viscosity Recommended

In regards to Pennzoil, their Ultra Platinum has been certified by GM. Here is a screenshot of an email I received from Shell USA

Sorry @Byrds8 . That's incorrect information.
It is approved by GM.
They would have to prove it was the oil changes every 2500-3 K that blew the engine. I've got every receipt for everything I've ever done to my truck. I do my best to always use products that exceed GM's quality expectations!

You would definitely have to show me how that info is incorrect when it comes from the GM Dexos website. Regardless of an email from Pennzoil stating "its coming" doesnt mean its there yet.

I think running any quality 0W40 oil is gonna be just fine. DEXOS doesn't likely mean better protection, it's simply a formula that GM approved and licensed for use. I've always used it, primarily cause I use Mobil 1 oil. But I wouldn't be sweating running other quality name brands.

Agree 100%. I’m sure there are better oils than than some of the DEXOS certified ones. I only answered the direct question of it that specific oil was on the list. I used PUP all the time in prior vehicles but it was more readily available then too.

That's partly why I use Mobil 1 cause its usually easy to get. However, I had a hard time finding their ATF and gear oil locally this past week, so I'm about to drop in some Valvoline.

SO.......1st and foremost I need to speak up and own my mistake. Yes Pennzoil ultimate Platinum 0W-40 is Dexos approved, BUT not the specific formula I have currently.
My apologies @Byrds8.

So after some specific research in which most of my info came from the Lake the motor oil geek.

The difference between the the SRT formula Pennzoil ultra platinum 0 w 40 and the mobil 1 brands...(3 different formulas) Is that the SRT formula has specific detergents and ani wear agents containing specific metals that are designed to work the best with high performance SRT engines... Hellcat, hemi, ect.
It has to do with the type of metals they use as a base for the detergent and the anti-wear agent and if it is compatible with the type of metals that the engine metals are made from. Specific example is the SRT formula has a higher boron value as part of its anti wear additive package, but the base oil use by Pennzoil is not. It exceeds most other brands of oil, but I did not know about the specifics of the detergent and anti wear packages and how they are mixed with the base oil, specifically, the types of metals used in their detergent and anti-ware packages between the formulas. Next change I'm going to try the Pennzoil ultimate Platinum 0W-40 with the dexos seal and license number.
I'm not going to run out and change my oil after 500 mi because the chemical makeup of a detergent package. I feel extremely confident that this oil is not going to damage the engine, rather science shows the exact opposite.
I will do more research to see if there is any adverse effects from the SRT formula compared to Mobil 1 formulas and post my findings.

Regardless of the specific formula, Pennzoil ultra platinum base formula is a superior oil to most brands because of the way it is processed. It is the only oil that is made from gas and it is the only brand that uses a higher concentration of pure synthetic oil in the mix. Other brands use more regularly processed oil and add less synthetic in the mix. When a company advertises fully synthetic.....it is not truly full synthetic, rather a blend between a large base of regular oil and a small amount of synthetic oil. Pennzoil ultra platinum base oil is superior and the combination of a higher amount of detergents and anti wear additives from most other brands, makes it what it is.

Well the GM DexosR site listing has been updated, some of the Mobil 1 oils that were on it before are no longer on the list to inlcude Mobil1 FS (which I just purchased for my next oil change), Mobil1 ESP and Mobil 1.

Brand Name Supplier Specification Viscosity License Number
EDGE 0W-40 M Castrol Ltd. dexos™R 0W-40 DR55FAGJ220
Mobil 1 Supercar ExxonMobil Oil Corporation dexos™R 0W-40 DR40FADA015
Mobil 1 Supercar ExxonMobil Oil Corporation dexos™R 5W-50 DR40JADH015
Pennzoil Ultra Platinum SQ Shell Oil Products Co. dexos™R 0W-40 DR65FBGI800
Pennzoil Ultra Platinum SP Shell Oil Products Co. dexos™R 0W-40 DR65FAGI800

Reference the Mobil1 FS, I went to the Mobil1 site and it indicates FS 0W-40 is DexosR certified. So the GM listing is incomplete at the least:

My head hurts.

Love how they just change it all at the drop of a hat. It went from only having Supercar on it to having the other Mobil 1 oils over night when the recall originally happened. Gives you real confidence in their "testing & certifying" Not that I had confidence in GM before :D

Yeah I think they figured out real quick they had to come up with some options just to cover the recall, lol. A oil viscosity change in response to poor parts machining doesn't really inspire confidence 🤷‍♂️. I still get carfax emails on my 1500. So far it's still going. Last service was a couple months ago with 43k miles

Agree 100%. The 1500 ZR2 I traded in is still sitting on the lot. So far they have dropped the price twice. My deal is looking better all the time lol.

There's so many repos hitting the lots, they'll be a dime a dozen soon.

My sxs I traded is listed $2k less than I got for the trade. Plus I blew a shock the morning i traded it in the afternoon.

Ive already run the FS and did an oil analysis and it looked just fine.......motor oil is motor oil. I'll run that shit again!

I wouldnt be surprised if it didnt drop again soon. They are asking too much for it since it was in a wreck. Had they asked for about 49K to start, it may have already sold. I got 45K on the deal. The longer they wait though, the more the newer ones will drop in price and the harder this one will be to sell.

I think some of that could be they were just getting top dollar for the H2s when they first dropped. They were all listed for 44-46,000 here. Now a dealer right down the road from me has them listed for 38,699. You know how they do trades. They say your getting X amount for your trade, when really that's just room they have on the new purchase.

Yeah, its just a big game. Same with my son's trade for the Colorado.

I traded my sxs for low book, which was about $12k. I could have sold it for little more. But you save some sales tax on the trade value. I got about $1200 off the H2 5ES, so it was about $42K, so about $30kish to boot.
