With respect to that crank, I haven't really heard the cranks were bad, just the bearings. I've heard misaligned con rods, which could imply bad cranks.True, but I thought it was interesting the guy named the plant in Mexico that was churning out bad cranks. And you are 100% right about QC, GM let this shit go on for years while people's engines were blowing up - the QC is all on them regardless of where the parts were made. Somehow that never seems to make it to Mary's bonus though...![]()

I watched that video today. Lake Speed Jr (Dr. Oil) has a great description of the problem with the finish on the cranks and why some may have made it by and others not so much (casting too rough, sanding belt worn out) and then how different oil viscosities play into that. And how CAFE rules for mileage vs number of units sold helped dictate the oil used instead of the intended use of the vehicle.@landpilot you were 100% right on crank being out of spec and journals not polished correctly. Lots of info on that topic in first few minutes of video. No real details on the specifics of the out of spec tolerances, but could be random and affect one or more cylinders due to machining equipment wear or tooling bits or abrasives.
Some more good info here in this video. The consensus is it's a total disaster and no way to know what engines have the bad cranks. Ultimately, some may have had a quick polish to bring them into spec before install, but they are subject to fail cause they were out of spec from production factory in Mexico.
I thought it was interesting that at the beginning he mentioned some inside sources, then proceeded to tell starting a 7:00 that the out of spec cranks were sanded/ polished at the Towowanda plant in an attempt to get them back in spec.
