ZR2 Regrets?

Currently in a 2017 RAM Limited with 197,500.

My desire is and has been to go up to a 3/4 ton. I do not need the 3/4 ton however, we may "potentially" need it in the future. The vast majority of my towing will be dog trailers (see the links below). Perhaps an ATV or SxS will be added to the trailer. We "may" get a travel trailer down the road, but that is not an immediate concern either. My desire for the 3/4 ton is for the size, capacity and looks.

The finalists for me are; the RAM RHO, 3/4 ton RAM Limited or 3/4 ton ZR2/AT4X.

The RHO is really nice. Really nice.

The 3/4 ton RAM was nice and rode well also.

The 3/4 ton ZR2 rode well. I am just not sold on the interior looks.

The 3/4 ton AT4X wasn't bad. However, I found the AT4X seats to be small and uncomfortable.

Probably won't be a popular opinion on a ZR2 forum, But If I didn't tow much, I'd probably have a RHO. That said, if you are towing those trailers often. Not sure I get a RHO since it's always in AWD. Also turbo v6 wouldn't be my choice even for light towing on a regular basis. Ram 3/4 vs Chevy 3/4 Well good luck with that, lol. More personal preference then anything. My ZR2 HD is a 24 and I like it My biggest complaint with it is the same with all the newer HDs. It's like driving a Uhaul truck for a daily driver. But it tows good, has a good sized bed and the cab is spacious lol.

The RHO is awesome and it is a big truck. The sound SUCKS from the RHO. Sounds like a BMW, not a truck. I know guys are putting bags in the RHO and towing 8,000lbs.-9,000lbs. no problem. The interior on the RHO is phenomenal. However, I hate the small bed.

I am at the point where I think I want the future ability to tow whatever we may possible get.

The ZR2 is a beast and a great truck for $10,000 less than an RHO. Gas mileage is about the same.

It's hard to beat the 2500HD for a balance of offroad use, towing, and daily driving. I have both the 1500 and 2500HD ZR2. The 1500 is way more fun to drive for daily use, but I've driven the Duramax 2500HDs for 22 years and thats the one I like best and I tow up to 15k lbs.

My Dad owns the Ram 1500 Hurricane SST and it hauls ass. The Laramie is a plush interior. It sounds pretty good to me when you hammer on it. He tows his boat and sxs with ease and comfort. He has a 2500 and 3500 for towing heavy and they are nice too. That being said, hes spent the last two weeks running to the dealer for recalls and warranty work on all three. So you aren't getting any higher quality assurance from any brand. Just pick one and go!

I bird hunt multiple states from September to December and often pulling a Jones 6 hole. Camp BLM and may be hunting a couple weeks at a time. I also run a 3-4 dog crate setup in bed and back floor board at times. I’ve had a 1500 zr2 with a 6.2 and a 3.0, now running a 3/4 zr2.

I really liked the 1500 size and suspension for two tracks, mountain roads, etc. Extremely capable for at least my use cases camping on BLM, hunting multiple states and varied terrain and weather.

Here are a few primary reasons I am glad I went to the 2500 -

- fuel tank size - the 3.0 was fine, the 6.2 was simply too small given MPG being very remote and loaded down without hauling ample gas jugs

- payload with a guy or two, camping gear, dog gear, hunting gear, trailer, water, food, DECKED, etc - I’m confident I was often at or over which compounded need for larger fuel tank size

- high payload and western speeds with strong headwind DEF consumption on 3.0 was impressively high

- overall size - given all the gear, it’s just nice having the additional on board storage

- 2500 zr2 is big but for a 3/4 ton in stock form it handles really well on two tracks, Mtn roads, etc
