While in New Mexico Friday heard a horrible grinding noise. Got out looked everywhere even crawled underneath and nothing touching or rubbing anywhere then got back in and drove a few feet and there it was again. Turns out the driver's side power step motor had died and was grinding and the step would not go up. My GM Extended Service Plan saved me 800.00 from the 900.00 total as all I had was the 100.00 deductible. With all of the electrical devices especially the retractable steps which I have to have due to the terrain I have to go over the other type just get destroyed eventually I am not surprised but still disappointed.

Oh well hope the other side does not go out while I am out there!

Glad you got it fixed. I love the concept of retractable steps, even have them on my wife's truck and love them. But when it comes to the terrain I run my truck on, it just feels like it's a fail point waiting to happen. Nothing like having just a good ol fashioned nerf bar bolted or welded on.

I agree--the GM steps have one motor. The ones I have installed myself have 2 motors on each side. On all of the previous one that were installed by me never any issues and that includes the ones on my 2024 Colorado Bison.

You can buy those motors for low $. Leave one in your truck, its a bout a 3 minute swap for three bolts.

It seems to not matter which OEM they all seem to have issues. I avoided them and got the off road ones.
I’ve heard of people having issues in the winter and with mud.
