Greetings folks,

2 weeks ago a drunk driver totaled my '22 Z71 RST. After the insurance dust had settled, I managed to find a '23 ZR2 w/ 6.2L at a local dealer and it was truly love at first sight. It followed me home and I couldn't be happier. Before the Z71, I (very) briefly had a 2020 AT4 with the 6.2 and I used a Range OBD unit to manage the DFM jerkiness and it worked wonderfully as advertised. With the '23 ZR2 I bought the same OBD port device and used it for a while without issue, then I found a few days later that I bought the wrong unit. That leads me to a couple of questions...

1.) If anyone knows why I shouldn't use the OBD version, let me know because I don't understand the difference between the ECM version and the OBD version. I reached out to Range and what I got back was largely unintelligible with some vague reference to the potential of draining the battery. I can't use the ECM version as I am too freaking old to be climbing under the truck to remove it in the event of a dealer visit, simply not gonna happen.

2.) I believe that I saw somewhere that GM can and does collect telemetry data from vehicles that includes engine data as well as a host of other things. Normally I wouldn't give a sh1t but given the warranty promises, I wonder if the use of the Range delete could be identified and the bypass function recorded to be uploaded to the mothership and potentially voiding the extended engine coverage? It would require the use of an OnStar subscription to upload the info, and I know that I could opt not to use that, but it was right there calling 911 within seconds after my accident, not sure I would want to be without it now. Does anyone know if telemetry collection is true, and if so, would the Range OBD unit be discoverable while "in use"?

Thanks for your help!
Gary

If it was me personally, I would buy the correct one and sell the other one to recover some of the cash. These newer 22.5+ electronics are temperamental and a totally different electronic architecture with the Global B software. You run the risk of doing some damage if it messes with the electrical hardware. There are plenty of examples of ECUs and other electronics in these trucks getting fried by simply doing software updates.

My ECU got fried cause I left the DFM module in place when the dealer reprogrammed the ECU. I wouldn't risk it.

Thanks for letting me know. I'll just need to do without I guess. After 5 back surgeries there is no way that I can get under the truck to remove it whenever I need to take it in for service.

I have done some looking on the forum and I found may saying that the "L9" method has largely the same effect as the Range units? Seems to simple.

I'm sure the dealer or a neighbor would help you install it. It doesn't have to come out unless they are programming the ECU. That is rare.
