running boards

I was looking to purchase high clearance runnings boards for my zr2. I wanted to know from those that have them do they protect against a passenger vehicles door hitting your door in a parking lot? ie. does it stick out further than the highest point in the door?

I have the Chevy branded dealer installed running boards on mine. They hit car doors first...No dings in my door.
