GM Recall 6.2 L V8

A better idea...If you can observe, watch what bottle the oil comes out of. There are shops (not naming them) that use bulk oil and tell the customer that it's whatever they want it to be.

No, your engine won't suddenly explode because of it. No, without an oil analysis you can't tell what it actually is. This type of dishonesty happens all the time.

UPDATE: Took truck into dealer for oil change, came out to $69 and seemed a little cheap. I asked and they confirmed they put in OW-20 in it. So, be sure you double check or have the service advisor note it needs OW-40. On the brightside they waived all charges due to their error and the wait. So free oil change this go around. You would think with a OW-40 oil cap added and recall passed on the notes the tech would ensure they use the right oil. The estimated cost for new oil change will be around $160, anything under that double check they put the correct oil in your truck.
Dumbfuckery, but i wouldn't even sweat it! At year 9, I'm running 0w08 and adding some silica!

Yes...Especially at dealerships. Read your owners manual...For that matter, look at owner's manual from several different cars/trucks of the same brand. Different oil viscosity recommendations for different temperatures for different cars. Now, walk out back and look for the oil fill hoses in the bay and follow those hoses back to the tank(s). Tell me how many tanks you see. Come to your own conclusions.

My Ram dealer used oil out of gallon jugs for my Cummins. My Chevy dealer uses bulk. Which one should I trust more?

My wife is a service manager at a Chevy dealer. I can tell you at her specific location they won’t do that-the price to pay if they were to get caught will eat any profit they may have made-your dealer may vary tho.

What will happen should you have an engine warranty claim:
1) They’ll want proof of oil changes-even if just a photo/scan of the receipt that you bought the oil/filter and the date somewhat corresponds to the oil life monitor reset.
2) They’ll yank an oil sample and send for analysis. They can’t tell what the brand name was of the oil in the engine, BUT they know what the additive package should look like of what they specified.

My advice-buy your own oil and filter and do it yourself. It’s not horrible to do. Take a pic of the receipt and save to an album in your phone or keep the physical receipt if that’s more your speed. That way it removes all doubt as to what’s going in your engine.
