Coolant smell is slowly becoming annoying

3,500 miles and 2.5 quarts low. Back to the dealer on Monday. “Duramaxes love their oil like captains love their rum.” “Why is that CaptCUNextTues?” “Nobody knows…

GM, “Got to expect losses.” Captain Ron quotes are the only thing that help
I can't believe they haven't been able to resolve this issue. Tell them you want a different truck.

I believe there was, and is, more going on than the oil cooler. All the other oil cooler failures show oil and coolant over flowing from the reservoir. My oil and coolant were way low when I noticed the problem. Literally happened in less than than 1,500 miles, the first time around.

At the least I'd want a new engine at this point. I can't imagine the coolant and oil mixing like that repeatedly is good for the engine long term. If its not leaking or overflowing, but they are both getting low. That means its going through the engine 😮 wonder what your DPF looks like.

I don’t think oil is still entering the coolant currently. The coolant reservoir is collecting remnants still leftover in the system, including the heater core that was not replaced. Coolant level appears good, however the oil is going somewhere, most likely being disguised by my DPF

Yep, coolant in the oil damaged the rings/cylinder and now it's burning diesel and oil. It ain't evaporating or leaking, it's moving through the combustion chamber. It won't get better from here.

Right and you have to figure if enough coolant got in the oil to damage the rings/cylinder walls. What other wear and damage has been done to the rest of the engine. Running a engine on a mix of oil and antifreeze for any length of time has to cause a crazy amount of wear/damage. Heck people argue over what brand oil is best. Imagine running oil mixed with coolant. I'd want a new engine.

Yep, but since this issue had arisen, they may have made DexCool Dexos R approved, so no worries now!

Can’t wait for Flex Seal to be listed in a service bulletin

GM took two rock solid power plants and wrecked them, between the L5P Duramax and 6.2L(essentially LS motor). I can’t believe any engineer would sign off on anything that would lower quality and standards to this level, unless they were pressured from the powers that be. My last 6.2l Whipple supercharged, did 300k without a single issue. Changing the plugs every 20k sucked, but the motor was bullet proof, even with the small pulley.

It's a disgrace that they destroyed 2 legacy motors, not to mention transmissions too.

I seriously think you should ask for a new truck or at least a motor. The latest 6.2L recall now says only remedy to be applied is a replacement motor. No more oil change gimmicks.

Definitely parts quality, the designs are proven. Apparently applying more “GM Prison Lube” will fix it long enough for your warranty to expire…

Another thing that irks me, jeep owners from the same family of dealerships get jeeps, Mercedes owners get comparable Mercedes, $85k+ Chevy truck owners get Buick Encores, or worse, “whatever tiny shitbox they have with a csv transmission”, no bigger than a shoebox.
