Injector Problems

So I had all of the below codes pop up on me this morning. Took it to the repair shop in town and it died in the parking lot while idling. No mods besides the Banks Pedal Monster and idash. Truck has been great to this point with only 30k ish miles. Hopefully it is something fairly simple like the injector pigtails need replacement. Anyone had similar issues like this or found a solution?

That seems less likely to be injectors and more likely fuel pump, fuel pump control module or ECM. Not likely all the injectors would go bad at once.
Yes, this makes sense. I also found a recall for the ecm needing to be reflashed for the fuel injectors programming.

Interesting, I wonder if mine was done. I've had a couple recalls performed. Somehow I don't remember that one.

I need to verify if they did that on mine. Mine runs great and i get really good mileage unloaded, but towing heavy I get the worst mileage I've ever seen in a diesel. Maybe that's contributing to the issues.

I'm quite sure that ALL of those pigtails didn't poop the bed at one time. I'm also quite sure that I'd clear the codes, unplug the Banks hocus pocus, and drive it to see if they returned. If they return, move on toward another solution. If not, you found your solution...Either way, the Banks unit is but one more variable in the chain. Yes, regardless of what shyster Banks claims, his parts do cause issues sometimes.

My dealer said my truck wasn't in the recall. However, he said if I brought it in they would check it over for the poor towing mileage and see if they could load this recall software update into my rig.

Welp, no injector issues. ECM or fuel pump perhaps. Injector codes are gone but then I got DPF soot buildup pending codes and it went into reduced acceleration on my way to the dealership. Luckily it got me to the dealership without dying on me. Starting to think the pedal monster and ram intake could be the source. I've maintened this truck meticulously, now it seems like I've got electrical gremlins. Crazy

There's a lot of electrical gremlins in these trucks. I've had my share, including a def warning that could not be explained by dealer. I dont think your pedal monster or I dash are the culprit. The ram air could affect fueling requirements, but if you've been running it a while without issue, it probably isn't.

Yeah, no doubt. I really think it's the ECM or fuel pump module, but I'll leave it in their hands at this point and stop trying to guess. I think Banks makes great products and I seriously doubt they caused the problem, maybe it just highlighted or exacerbated it. We'll see.

Verdict is in. DEF contaminated diesel. I have never put DEF in my diesel tank and I've never gotten DEF from the pump. Only thing I can imagine is that somehow DEF got into the diesel at Murphy USA which is where I filled up the last two times. I know they're in separate tanks, but there has to be some explanation. Only other thing would be vandalism. Either way, the entire fuel system has to be replaced for about 16k. Talk about a gut punch.

Fuck that, drain the tank, flush the lines, change the filter, and run it.

I shit you not, I know a guy who's grandkids filled his diesel tank with the garden hose. He cleaned it out and ran it just fine. He even told the guy that bought it later what happened and the guy bought it anyway.

I asked the dealer if that was an option and they said no that too many components in the fuel system were damaged. Looks like insurance is going to cover it though so that helps. Love these trucks, but these dumb ass "emissions" components and systems are an unnecessary evil.

Of course they did, 'cause it's good for business.

How far did you drive it after the DEF was filled? How much def could there be in there?

It's just water and a bit of ammonia. Not sure what would get damaged, but I suppose the ammonia could damage the rubber o rings and seals. There's water in diesel all the time.

In the future you might want to consider the locking def and fuel cap. There's a thread on this forum about them and I have them. That might help prevent accidents or vandalism.

I drove about 550 miles all highway nonstop after getting the fuel at Murphy USA. What probably helped us that I put Archoil in every time I fuel up and that may have been the difference in making it home and not. No way to truly tell. Then I got I filled up again the next day at Murphy USA and that's when it from bad to worse and I barely got it to the dealer. Coming denominator is Murphy USA, so I won't be using their diesel any longer. They didn't say how much got in there, but I am 100% sure I didn't do it. I am interested in the locking caps though. I had looked for them when I first bought the truck and never found any to fit these trucks so I'll definitely find that thread and purchase them.

Did you visit any of those oil change places? Because some of them put in DEF as part of a fluid top-off.

That makes more sense then. If it was in there for a long run like that and the ammonia is concentrated enough then its probably corrosive to the metal and rubber/plastic bits. It may have actually been the metal and rubber parts destroying the injectors.

I've only filled DEF/DIESEL at truck stops a few times in 12 years of DEF rigs. I guess i might stick with the Walmart jugs for $8.88 for 2.5 galllons and get fuel at local stations.

Did you contact Murphy?
