If you let the filter media sit on a shop rag for a few days after you remove it from the canister its easier to cut away from the plastic cage. Also the metal is easier to see. I"ve cut open hundreds of filters or inspected canister filter and there's usually some metal flakes and slivers in the first change.

If you really want to track wear, then oil analysis is the best way to.see what's happening inside the motor.
