Anybody using Star Link satellite system for any of their media or data?

I have some remote sites that I want to add some security cameras, some controllable lighting, and also some data monitoring/reporting.

There's a fiber line close by one of the sites, so it would be relatively easy to connect there, but would have to install some other equipment 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 of a mile apart.

Any thoughts?

Funny you should ask, we just installed it today to support a mobile MRI unit.. nearly 200Mbit down and 30Mbit up. It should work fine for your application. I also have it at my lake house (now my permanent house) as a backup to the 1Gbit fiber we have (we work from home a lot). I had it for 3 years before the fiber got installed and never had an issue with Teams, Zoom, Google Meet, or any of the security cameras and home automation we use.

Do you have a pretty clear view of the sky?

Excellent! Happy to hear of your success with it. I have read mostly positive reviews, but haven't asked for a consultation or pricing yet. Do they have local installers or consultants to help with design and install or do you have to contract separately?

Yes, this site is in North Dakota and there are mostly wide open spaces. We do have some smaller trees around one site and an adjacent powerline on three other sites. But we can address that if needed.

For the commercial install we did today, we had a contractor - mainly because the trailer houses MRI and X-ray equipment and is shielded. But for my house, I did the install with the help of a couple of neighbors (mainly holding beers and telling me how to do it better... 🤣 )

I have starlink mounted the stubby cows spare. I love it. I have the Roam 50 plan and its plenty. We did go over last month because I had 2 extra peeps logged in when we ran Rimrocker to Moab.

So what's the range on the satellite home base? Is it just a couple hundred feet? Will I need a separate one for each site?

How was RimRocker? I was thinking of doing the trail this summer or heading to the headwaters of the green river. Your feedback could decide that trip!

1200 feet, across 4000 feet
Yeah you won’t get that kind of coverage. If you have a clear line of sight between the buildings you might try Ubiquiti networking. It’s a point to point system that could let you get by with one Starlink. But you’d need clear sight lines.

@Top shelf It was fun, very scenic and we hit some spots at elevation that had some rain/snow that made the trail more interesting.

We ran it with Dewie from Colorado Mall Crawlers, he should have the vid up soon.

Overall great trail and we had 2 great camping spots that I'm happy to share if you do run it.

I'll look into that. Three sites have clear line of site, then the other two sites have a clear line. So maybe I need two! Might be cheaper than running fiber.
